When is a multilingual label cost-effective?
Multilingual labels make economic sense when a product is sold in two to four markets with moderate sales volumes—when the print run for each market individually is too small to justify the costs of separate printing plates, cutting dies, and production tools. For large print runs in a single market (over 100,000 units), a separate monolingual label may be cheaper per unit than a multilingual label—because the text is shorter, the design is simpler, and printing is faster.
Logistics is the second argument in favor of multilingual labels—the manufacturer maintains a single product version instead of several country-specific variants. A single pallet of goods can be distributed to different countries without relabeling—which eliminates an additional step in the supply chain and the risk of errors (such as sending a Polish label to Germany or a Czech label to Austria). For companies with a rapidly changing portfolio of export markets, the flexibility of a single multilingual label cannot be overstated.
Industries where multilingual labels are standard include: cosmetics (EU regulations allow for multilingual labels throughout the European Economic Area), packaged food (particularly products with a longer shelf life, distributed by international chains), household chemicals (cleaning products, detergents), and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. In each of these industries, labeling regulations are detailed and vary from country to country—a multilingual label must meet the requirements of all target markets simultaneously.
Designing Multilingual Labels—Typographic Challenges
The main challenge in designing labels for multiple markets is limited space—a label that looks legible with one language becomes crowded and illegible with four. German has longer words than Polish (compound nouns without spaces), Finnish has long case endings, and Arabic and Hebrew require right-to-left text—all of which complicate the layout.
The minimum font size on a label is a matter regulated by law—EU Regulation 1169/2011 for food requires text with a minimum height of 1.2 mm (for packages with the largest dimension exceeding 80 cm²) or 0.9 mm (for smaller packages). These requirements apply to every language version—it is not sufficient for the Polish text to be 1.2 mm if the Czech text is reduced to 0.8 mm to accommodate an additional language.
The visual hierarchy on a multilingual label requires careful consideration—do all languages have equal status (same font size, same layout), or is the language of the primary market dominant (larger, higher), with the other languages smaller? The solution depends on the brand’s strategy and legal requirements—in some markets, regulations require that the local language be at least as legible as any other language on the label.
The fonts used on a multilingual label must support the diacritical marks of all target languages—Polish ą, ę, ó, ś, ź, ż; Czech ř, ů, ě; German ü, ö, ä, ß; and Romanian ș, ț, ă. Not every font has a complete character set—the absence of a single diacritical mark results in blank squares or substitutes that look like a printing error. Before approving a design, we check how the text renders in all target languages—this step is often overlooked and only discovered during the color proof.
Color coding or graphic symbols make it easier to navigate a multilingual label—national flags next to each text block, colored stripes separating languages, or language initials (PL, DE, CZ, SK) at the beginning of each block help consumers quickly find their language version. These elements take up additional space on the label—but they improve usability enough to make it worth dedicating that space to them.
Legal Regulations—What Must Be Included on the Label, and in What Language?
Export labels must meet the requirements of each target market—and these requirements vary from country to country, even within the European Union. Regulation 1169/2011 requires that mandatory food information (name, ingredients, allergens, nutritional information, expiration date, storage conditions) be provided in the official language of the country of sale—but it does not prohibit the inclusion of other languages. Countries may have additional local requirements—Belgium requires three languages (French, Dutch, German), and Switzerland requires four (German, French, Italian, Romansh).
For cosmetics, Regulation 1223/2009 requires labeling in the language of the Member State where the product is made available to consumers—but the list of ingredients (INCI) is standardly in Latin and English and does not require translation. Warnings and instructions for use must be in the local language—these are the elements that take up the most space on a multilingual label.
For household cleaning products, the CLP Regulation (1272/2008) requires hazard pictograms, signal words, and safety statements in the official language—the pictograms are universal, but the text must be translated. Labels for many household chemical markets tend to be the most crowded—because the CLP information requirements are extensive, and each language adds another block of text.
Translation errors on multilingual labels pose not only a reputational risk but also a legal one—a misinterpreted allergen, a missing warning, or an incorrect product name can result in a product recall and financial penalties. Label translations should be done by industry-specific translators (not by machine translation tools) and verified by individuals familiar with local regulations—the cost of a professional label translation is a few hundred zlotys per language, while the cost of recalling a product from store shelves runs into the tens or hundreds of thousands.
How can you fit all the information on the label?
A booklet label is a solution that multiplies the available space—a multi-layered label with a peel-off layer that reveals additional text underneath. The first layer contains information in the primary language and graphic elements, while the inner layers contain translations into other languages. A booklet label allows you to fit six to eight languages on a standard-size label—at the cost of higher production costs and the need for the consumer to physically peel off a layer.
A peel-off label is a simpler version—a two-layer label whose top layer lifts up like a flap, revealing additional text on the bottom layer. It takes up less space than a booklet and is cheaper to produce—but it can only accommodate two to three additional languages.
A QR code linking to a webpage with information in multiple languages is a modern solution—but it does not replace the mandatory information on the label. Regulations require that key information be directly legible on the packaging without additional devices—a QR code is a supplement, not a replacement for the text on the label. For non-mandatory information (ingredients, usage instructions, brand history), a QR code is an elegant solution that saves space on the physical label.
Multilingual labels are a solution that requires compromises—but with proper planning, these compromises don’t have to mean sacrificing readability or aesthetics. A manufacturer selling in multiple markets should treat a multilingual label as a strategic project—not simply as a translation of a single-language label into several languages.
